Waitrose 'to create 1,500 jobs' in North West

Supermarket chain Waitrose has said it plans to open at least 10 new shops in the North West in the next five years, creating 1,500 jobs.

The retailer said it aimed to spend £100m on new sites in the region, including a £35m distribution centre in Chorley, Lancashire, to open in 2012.

The company currently has eight stores in the North West, including one which opened in Chester last week.

Waitrose, part of John Lewis, has more than 240 branches around the UK.

David Jones, Waitrose director, said it marked another chapter in the "growth of the Waitrose brand in the North West".
