Would you employ a Service Leaver? A simple question, but ask a commercial manager and you probably wont get a straight answer, but in reality, 50% (ish) would probably say no if they could avoid a discrimination claim. When you actually probe the subject deeper, there are many misconceptions about the potential employability of Ex-Military people, the most popular include:
"they dont have any commercial experience" and "they are probably ok at security work"
Gemini Forces have many years experience of dealing with civilian employers and it is an uphill struggle, convincing them that Military people are highly adaptable and have a unique combination of highly developed skills and qualities, it is however very often a completely different story when they have employed one, suddenly 'the penny drops' and they ask can you get me another one of them.
If you are a Service Leaver, you will probably find that your first job is the hardest you have had or indeed will have, that job is 'Your Jobsearch' in other words getting your first post military employment.
The discrimination we encounter is due to ignorance and we must all constantly fight that ignorance.
I'm always interested in other peoples experiences.
